Introduction

Inline editing is the ability to edit fields and data directly within a record's interface. You can begin typing or selecting options by simply clicking on a field, without having to open a separate edit page or pop-up window. This feature allows for more efficient and faster data entry and update processes, as well as a better user experience.

Limitations of Editing in Standard-Related Lists

Let us assume you need to change the value of a field on multiple records. In Related Lists, you can only edit and update a field for a single record. Thus, it can be time-consuming to go into each record and update a field value individually. However, with Orenda Grids XRL inline and bulk editing feature, you can edit not only one field in a record, but you can edit one field in multiple records at the same time.

This feature is not enabled by default in the Related List view, and can be accessible only if configured by the Power User. However, once you have access, it is extremely useful for updating multiple records at the same time.

This article will explain how to:

  • Enable editing feature in XRL
  • Apply inline editing to the fields in XRL
  • Apply bulk editing to the fields in XRL
  • Enabling the Standard Edit feature in XRL

Prerequisite:

  • Not every field in the object is editable. Make sure that the field itself is editable. For example, Case Id and Case Number in the Cases object are not editable fields.
  • The Related List view must be configured to enable bulk actions through table settings.
  • Editing of any field in XRL is possible only if the Admin has not assigned the “Read-only” setting to a Field through field-level security. To know more about field settings, click here.

Enable Inline Editing in XRL

This functionality allows you to perform inline data edits and updates. If you have Power User access, you can enable the editing functionality through Field Settings in XRL to be able to edit any field.
If you have Standard User access, you will need to share the given XRL view with a power user who can enable field editing for you.

Tip:

To learn how a user can share a given view with other users in the org, read our article on How to share a view and delete a view in XRL.

Procedure

Inline editing must be enabled by the power user by using the Field Settings in the configuration wizard. We will work with the Cases XRL example to walk you through the steps.

Step 1: Click on the settings dropdown on the right and click on Configure option.

Step 2: The configuration wizard is displayed. Click on the Fields Settings tab. Under the Fields Selection drop-down, select the field for which you want to enable the inline editing. i.e., Case Origin in the given example.

Step 3: Scroll down the window and select the checkbox Is Column Editable. Please note that inline editing is not applicable to some of the columns.

Step 4: Click Save. By enabling inline editing for the specific column, the standard user can edit the column as required.

The following field types can be enabled for inline editing:

  • Text
  • Numeric
  • Date
  • Values List
  • Cross-Reference
  • Related Records
  • User/Groups List
  • Record Permissions

Results

Click Save. You will be able to see the edit/pen icon on the specific column, for which column editing was enabled in previous steps.
