How to Edit Fields in XRL -Release3b
Learn how to simplify data entry and make content changes directly in an already displayed page.
Introduction
Inline editing is the ability to edit fields and data directly within a record's interface. You can begin typing or selecting options by simply clicking on a field, without having to open a separate edit page or pop-up window. This feature allows for more efficient and faster data entry and update processes, as well as a better user experience.
Limitations of Editing in Standard-Related Lists
Let us assume you need to change the value of a field on multiple records. In Related Lists, you can only edit and update a field for a single record. Thus, it can be time-consuming to go into each record and update a field value individually. However, with HyperGrid XRL inline and bulk editing feature, you can edit not only one field in a record, but you can edit one field in multiple records at the same time.
This feature is not enabled by default in the Related List view, and can be accessible only if configured by the Power User. However, once you have access, it is extremely useful for updating multiple records at the same time.
This article will explain how to:
- Enable editing feature in XRL
- Apply inline editing to the fields in XRL
- Apply bulk editing to the fields in XRL
- Enabling the Standard Edit feature in XRL

Enable Inline Editing in XRL
This functionality allows you to perform inline data edits and updates. If you have Power User access, you can enable the editing functionality through Field Settings in XRL to be able to edit any field.
If you have standard user access, you will need to share the given XRL view with a power user who can enable field editing for you.
Tip: To learn how a user can share a given view with other users in the org, read our article on How to share a view and delete a view in XRL. |
Procedure
Inline editing must be enabled by the power user by using the Field Settings in the configuration wizard. We will work with the Cases XRL example to walk you through the steps.
Step 1: Click on the settings dropdown on the right and click on Configure option.
Step 2: The configuration wizard is displayed. Click on the Fields Settings tab. Under the Fields Selection drop-down, select the field for which you want to enable the inline editing. i.e., Case Origin in the given example.
Step 3: Scroll down the window and select the checkbox Is Column Editable. Please note that inline editing is not applicable to some of the columns.
Step 4: Click Save. By enabling inline editing for the specific column, the standard user can edit the column as required.
The following field types can be enabled for inline editing:
- Text
- Numeric
- Date
- Values List
- Cross-Reference
- Related Records
- User/Groups List
- Record Permissions
Results
Click Save. You will be able to see the filter icon on the specific column, for which column editing was enabled in previous steps.
Apply Inline Editing in XRL
In the above section, we have understood how a Power User enabled inline editing for the Case Origin column. We will use the same column to understand how to edit and make changes to the fields.
Procedure
Step 1: Select the row that contains the data you want to change by clicking on it. The field's data type-specific editing options are displayed. For example, menu options and date options are displayed for the appropriate fields.
Step 2: Select/enter the updated value. Click outside the field you are editing or press Enter to save the changes. Or, click on the Press ESC to cancel the edit.
Results
Click the Save button on global actions which appear after the editing is made to the column. This will update the new value of a field in the Related List view and database.
Apply Bulk Editing in XRL
We will use the Case Origin column to understand how to do bulk editing of a specific field in multiple records.
Procedure
Step 1: Select all of the records in the View that you want to edit, then double-click on a value (Email, Phone, Mobile) in the field/column that you want to change.
Step 2: A pop-up window will appear, allowing you to select the value to which you want to update the selected records. You can update a single record ("The record clicked") or all selected records. Click Apply to save the changes.
Click the Save button on global actions which appear after the editing is made to the column. This will update the new value of a field in all the selected records in the Related List view and database.
Otherwise, click on Undo button to discard the editing done in records and revert to the previous values.
Enabling and Using Standard Editing Functionality in XRL
Apart from inline editing, HyperGrid supports the Standard edit feature same as the Standard Edit feature in Salesforce Related List. The difference between the two types of editing is that, through inline editing, you can edit the specific field which is visible in a record in the Related List view. However, in the case of standard editing, a user can edit every editable field of a specific record at once.
Procedure
To enable Standard editing in XRL, you need to follow the steps mentioned below. Please note that Standard editing can only be enabled in the Related List view when inline editing has been enabled for at least one column in the Related List view, beforehand. Essentially, the Standard edit in XRL replaces the inline edit functionality. And once the standard edit is enabled, all the available fields for editing can be edited and updated, regardless of whether they are enabled for editing in XRL or not.
Step 1: From the parent record page, go to the concerned XRL Related List view. For example, Go to Cases XRL on the Test Account page. Click on the gear icon on the right and select Configure.
Step 2: In the Configuration wizard, go to Table Settings.
Step 3: Select the “Enable Standard Edit” checkbox among the listed options.
Step 4: Click on the Save button.
Step 5: In the Related List view, double-click on any editable column.
Step 6: Edit Pop-Up window will open up where you can edit and save any editable field for a Case record, as shown in the image following image.
Step 7: You will be able to see the changes made to the Case record in the Related List view.
